Choke Industries, LLC. is a brand born within Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood. Starting as an apartment-based operation in 2008, Matt and Jeff began by selling their wares through two avenues- the internet and the Fremont Farmer’s Market. Their approach to the company was to create memorable designs on quality products that stood out among the crowd. By early 2009, the Choke operation outgrew its home in Fremont, and relocated to Seattle’s SODO neighborhood to a new studio space and their first printing press. Being able to print the designs themselves allowed for greater creative freedoms within the lines of production and allowed Choke to develop their custom print shop (Choke Print Shop). While supporting themselves and their passions, Matt and Jeff were now able to create unique products that also supported other local businesses and organizations.
2010 marks the year that Choke became a full-time career. (Goodbye day jobs!) With greater time comes greater expansion, and Matt and Jeff found themselves relocating (again) to another, much larger, studio located east of Safeco Fields and Qwest Arena. During this time, Matt began attending tradeshows, where their connections to unique, quality retailers grew stronger. This same year, the Choke studio space doubled, and by the beginning of 2011 their sister brand, Towne 9 was established. Towne 9 began as a collection of recycled cotton wine totes and has expanded to include tote bags, greeting cards, and eccentric accessories such as enamel pins and key tags with its own sense of sassiness and style. In 2016 Choke was named the 12th largest LGBTQ-Owned Business in the Puget Sound Region!
Now, in 2017, Choke continues to grow as a company and is continuously developing products that are visually exciting. To date, Choke Print Shop has printed tees for some of Seattle’s largest corporations such as Starbucks, Amazon, and T-Mobile while also maintaining a strong line of support for small local businesses, organizations, musicians, and artists. Choke prides itself on supporting other LGBT-owned businesses and organizations and creates an annual Choke Shirt Company Pride Collection of products to celebrate that diversity in the community. Choke Shirt Company and Towne 9 can be found across the world in numerous locations in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
