T-shirt Spotlight - Fahantay

April 18, 2014

This particular design called the Fahantay is one of our older and more popular designs. As you can see, it's a lot of little elephants that makes up one jumbo elephant. Did you know that the word "jumbo" actually comes from the name of a real elephant? Yes, that was an excellent segue and yes there was actually a famous elephant named Jumbo. Jumbo was born in 1861 in French Sudan and was later captured and sold to the Paris zoo. In 1865 he was sold to the London zoo and became a household name for giving rides to children. Despite his popularity, he was sold again to the Barnum and Bailey circus for $244,000 in today's dollars. This was so upsetting that 100,000 English children wrote to Queen Victoria asking her to stop the sale of the elephant. In the United States Jumbo's popularity exploded, even performing at Madison Square Garden, as he was widely exhibited until his death in 1885. Jumbo weighed 13,000 pounds and was 13 feet 1 inches tall.
